904L is a highly alloyed, low carbon containing, non-stabilized austenitic stainless steel grade. Copper has been added to the alloy of 904L Stainless Steel Pipe. Hence, its resistance to strong reducing acids such as sulfuric acid is very high. The lower content of carbon makes it easier to produce the AISI 904L Welded Pipe according to specification ASTM A312. Though the content of carbon is lower, these pipes could be used for high temperature applications.
The significant inclusion of nickel to the alloy of ASME SA 312 TP904L makes it possible for the pipes to have an outstanding performance even in elevated settings. Along with being a non-magnetic alloy, the Stainless Steel 904L Pipe also exhibits good resistance to stress related corrosion cracking.
The presence of molybdenum in the alloy reduces the occurrence of crevice corrosion. Along with being used in applications between moderate to high temperatures, the ASTM A312 TP904L is primarily useful for general corrosion applications.
904L pipes undergo mechanical testing such as transverse or longitudinal tensile testing and flattening testing to achieve consistency in their axial performance. According to ASTM A312 standards, each 904L pipe must be supplied in a heat-treated condition, with appropriate heat-treating temperatures and rationale for cooling or testing.
