ASTM A312 Seamless stainless steel pipe is an alloy material with wide application areas covering machinery, chemical, petroleum, automobile, construction and other industries. There are many types of seamless stainless steel pipes, the most common ones are 304, 316, 321, etc. Among them, stainless steel 304 and 321 are commonly used models, each with unique performance and application areas. Although they both belong to the category of stainless steel, there are significant differences in composition, mechanical properties, corrosion resistance, etc.

  1. Chemical composition

304 seamless stainless steel pipe: The main components include iron, chromium and nickel, of which the chromium content is more than 18% and the nickel content is more than 8%. This alloy composition makes 304 stainless steel have good corrosion resistance and formability.

321 seamless stainless steel pipe: It also contains iron, chromium and nickel as the main components, but titanium or niobium elements are added to its alloy composition. Specifically, 321 stainless steel contains about 17% chromium, 9% nickel, and about 0.3% titanium. The addition of these elements gives 321 stainless steel better strength and creep properties in high temperature environments. Titanium can prevent seamless stainless steel pipes from sensitization and improve high temperature service life. Therefore, 321 stainless steel is better than 304 stainless steel in high temperature environments. However, in terms of appearance and physical properties, the two stainless steels are very similar, with only slight differences in chemical composition.

  2. Mechanical properties

In terms of mechanical properties, both 321 stainless steel pipes and 304 stainless steel pipes show good strength, ductility and toughness. However, since 321 stainless steel pipes contain titanium or niobium, these elements help to improve their strength and creep properties at high temperatures. Therefore, in high temperature environments, the mechanical properties of 321 stainless steel pipes may be better than those of 304 stainless steel pipes. In high temperature environments, 321 stainless steel can maintain better mechanical properties and is suitable for high temperature applications.

  3. Corrosion resistance

Corrosion resistance is one of the important properties of stainless steel pipes. In this regard, both 321 stainless steel pipes and 304 stainless steel pipes show good corrosion resistance, especially under general environmental conditions. However, in certain specific environments, such as high temperature, strong corrosive media, etc., the corrosion resistance of 321 stainless steel pipes may be more superior. This is because the titanium or niobium elements in 321 stainless steel pipes help reduce intergranular corrosion, thereby improving the corrosion resistance of the material in these harsh environments.

  4. Price

The price of 321 stainless steel is much higher than that of 304 stainless steel. In many places where high temperature hardness requirements are not required, it is more economical to choose to use 304 stainless steel pipes.

  5. Application areas

304 seamless stainless steel pipes are widely used in industrial and furniture decoration industries as well as food and medical industries due to their good corrosion resistance and formability, such as kitchen utensils, decoration materials, doors and windows, sanitary ware, etc. These fields have high requirements for the corrosion resistance and processing performance of the material.

321 seamless stainless steel pipes are more suitable for manufacturing welded components used at high temperatures due to their excellent high temperature stress rupture performance and high temperature creep resistance. For example, applications in high temperature environments such as petroleum waste gas combustion pipelines, engine exhaust pipes, boiler shells, aviation, gas turbines, power plants, etc. In addition, 321 stainless steel is also commonly used in industries that require high temperature resistance and corrosion resistance, such as heat exchangers and automotive parts.

  Conclusion:

There are significant differences between 321 seamless stainless steel pipes and 304 seamless stainless steel pipes in terms of material composition, mechanical properties, corrosion resistance and application areas. Understanding these differences will help us better select and apply these two stainless steel materials. In practical applications, we should choose the right stainless steel material according to the specific use environment and needs to ensure the performance and quality of the product.

The difference between ASTM A312 seamless stainless steel pipe 321 stainless steel and 304 stainless steel. When purchasing stainless steel products, we should pay attention to the material and performance of the product to ensure that it meets the use requirements. At the same time, we should also pay attention to the production standards and quality certification of stainless steel to ensure the quality and reliability of the product.

API 5L Gr.B Sch 40 and Sch 80 pipe most commonly used pipe schedule (SCH) is a measure of a steel pipe’s nominal wall thickness. In the past, metal fabricators used three pipe dimensions — standard, extra strong, and double extra strong. Just having these three undetermined dimensions wasn’t helpful, though. So today, steel pipes come in 14 different schedules.
